Daily Evening Routine
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5425

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is ideal to recite just before settling down to sleep. As the day winds down and the quiet of the night descends, our minds can sometimes race, dwelling on worries or lingering sadness. Making this dua helps us consciously entrust our burdens to Allah before we rest, seeking His protection from mental and emotional turmoil.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction and a heart turned towards Allah. Imagine yourself actively seeking His protection from the specific ailments mentioned: the heavy weight of worry (hamm), the dull ache of sadness (hazan), the feeling of helplessness (ajz), the drag of lethargy (kasal), the paralyzing grip of fear (jubn), the tight fist of miserliness (buhl), the crushing burden of debt, and the oppressive power of others. Picture these worries and anxieties being lifted as you utter the words, entrusting them to the One who has power over all things.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses many common sources of sleeplessness and unease: worry, sadness, feelings of inadequacy, and external pressures like debt and oppression. By seeking refuge in Allah from these ailments, the reciter finds a profound sense of peace and security. It's a proactive way to clear the mind of anxieties that can plague us at night, fostering a calmer state conducive to restful sleep. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would often recite comprehensive duas like this, showing us the importance of seeking Allah's protection against a wide range of troubles before sleep.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah for the removal of distress and said: 'O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and of the Great Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, Who Splits the grain and the date-stone, Who Revealed the Torah and the Gospel and the Quran, I seek refuge in You from the evil of all evil-doers whom You seize by the forelock. O Allah, You are the First, than Whom there is nothing before; You are the Last, than Whom there is nothing after; You are the Outward, than Whom there is nothing above; You are the Inward, than Whom there is nothing below. Remove our debt and enrich us from poverty.' Sahih al-Bukhari 6306. (Note: The specific dua requested is found in Sahih al-Bukhari 5425, which is a part of a longer narration about the Prophet's invocations for various needs, including seeking refuge from distress and anxiety.)
