Seeking Allah's Protection from Nature's Fierce Power

Weather & Nature
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3893

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the whispers of devils, and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdhuroon

When to Read

This powerful supplication is excellent to recite when you feel vulnerable to the elements or sense potential danger from natural phenomena like storms, earthquakes, or floods. It's a reminder that even in the face of nature's immense power, our ultimate recourse is to the Almighty Creator. Reciting it in the morning and evening, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught, offers comprehensive protection throughout the day and night.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with full conviction in Allah's power to protect. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised reciting it three times in the morning and three times in the evening. It's understood that 'perfect words of Allah' refers to His divine words, which encompass the Quran and His decree. The intention should be to acknowledge Allah's sovereignty over all creation and to place your trust entirely in Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking refuge from multiple sources of harm – divine anger and punishment, the evil of creation, and the insidious whispers of Shaytan. By reciting it, we acknowledge Allah's ultimate authority over all forces, seen and unseen. It’s a means of drawing Allah’s protection when facing potential harm from natural disasters, reminding us that nothing happens without His permission, and He is the best protector.

Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'Whoever says 'Bismillah alladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa Huwas-Sami'ul-'Aleem' (In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing can cause harm on earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing) three times every morning, will not be afflicted by any sudden calamity until morning comes. And whoever says it three times in the morning, will not be afflicted by sudden calamity until the evening comes. And the like of that happened to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and he was afflicted by a cold, and it was said to him: 'Do you not invoke the protection of the same words which you invoke every morning?' He said: 'Yes, but I did not invoke them today, and so a cold afflicted me.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3893, graded Hasan). A similar but slightly longer narration found in Sunan Abi Dawud 5088, includes the phrase: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdhuroon' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the whispers of devils, and from their presence).
