Dua for a Gentle Breeze and Pleasant Weather

Weather & Nature
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 4191

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهَا رِيحًا طَيِّبَةً، لَا عَذَابًا

O Allah, make it a pleasant wind, and not a tormenting one.

Allahumma ij'alha riihan tayyibatan, la 'adhaban

When to Read

This dua is recited when a strong or potentially harsh wind blows. It's a way to ask Allah to turn the wind into something beneficial and pleasant, rather than something destructive or harmful. We can also make this dua when we desire a gentle breeze for comfort or to cool ourselves on a warm day, acknowledging that even pleasant weather is a blessing from Allah.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincerity and a humble heart, turning towards the Qiblah if possible. Imagine the wind as a force of nature that only Allah controls, and ask Him to temper it with mercy. The intention is key: seeking Allah’s protection and His blessings in the changing weather.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua reflects a deep understanding of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and the believer's reliance on Him for all matters, including the weather. By asking Allah to make the wind 'tayyibatan' (pleasant/good), we are seeking its benefits, such as cooling the air, aiding in pollination, or powering windmills. Conversely, asking for it not to be a torment ('adhaban') shows our desire to be protected from its destructive potential, like storms or dust. It reminds us that all natural phenomena are subject to Allah's command, and that we should always turn to Him in both times of ease and hardship.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Aishah that when the wind blew strongly, the Prophet ﷺ would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, and the goodness of what is in it, and the goodness of what it has been sent with. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it has been sent with.' She said: 'And when the sky was clouded, a sign of rain, he would leave what he was doing even if he was praying, until it rained. And he would say: 'Allahumma sayyiban nafi'an (O Allah, send down beneficial rain).' (Sahih Ibn Hibban 773 – related in meaning. Sunan Ibn Majah 4191 includes a similar sentiment asking for the wind to be pleasant, not tormenting).
