Glory be to Allah, the Magnificent, and praise be to Him. O Allah, I ask You for the attainment of martyrdom and the longing for martyrdom. Make light in my hearing and my sight, and make light for me in my religion, and light in my grave, and light on the Day when You resurrect. Glory be to You, O Allah, there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when facing natural calamities like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, or other destructive natural events. It's also a general supplication for seeking Allah's protection and guidance in all aspects of life, especially when anticipating significant events or facing trials.

How to Read

Recite with sincere intention and heartfelt supplication. Face the Qiblah if possible. Place your hands on your chest while reciting, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to do when seeking protection. Reflect on the meaning of the words and feel your dependence on Allah (Exalted is He).

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encompasses seeking Allah's greatness, acknowledging His perfection, and asking for protection from trials. The request for 'light' (noor) in one's hearing, sight, religion, grave, and on the Day of Judgment is a profound plea for guidance and divine covering throughout life and the Hereafter. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words and His ultimate dominion, we acknowledge His power over all creation, including natural forces.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Verily, the believer is not afflicted with a worry or a disease or a misfortune or a sorrow or an annoyance or a grief - not even a prick of a thorn - but Allah will expiate for him his sins on account of his deeds.' (Sunan An-Nasa'i 5536). The specific wording of the dua for seeking protection is a profound supplication that reflects the believer's reliance on Allah (Exalted is He) during times of peril. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to seek refuge in Allah's perfect words from the evil of His creation, and this dua is an extension of that seeking of divine protection against the immense power of nature.
