Seeking Allah's Protection from Environmental Evils

Weather & Nature
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This powerful dua is for all times, but especially relevant when you encounter environmental disturbances that can affect your well-being. This includes areas with noticeable pollution, unpleasant natural odors (like stagnant water or decaying matter), or even when experiencing unfavorable weather patterns that bring about foul smells or airborne irritants. Recite it in the morning and evening, and whenever you feel the need for Allah's safeguarding.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heart full of reliance on Allah (SWT). It is best recited three times in the morning and three times in the evening, as taught by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Focus on the meaning as you say it, visualizing Allah's perfect words creating a shield around you, protecting you from all forms of created evil, including those that manifest as harmful smells or pollution in our environment.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encapsulates seeking Allah's all-encompassing protection. By invoking the 'perfect words of Allah,' we acknowledge His absolute power and the efficacy of His words in safeguarding us from harm. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this for protection against all evil, and this naturally extends to the unseen and seen harms that can come from our surroundings, including the detrimental effects of pollution and unpleasant, potentially harmful, natural emanations.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever says 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created) – three times – then nothing will harm him on that night.' (Sahih Muslim 2708). While the hadith specifies protection for the night, the general wording of seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words from the evil of all creation makes it applicable for protection against various harms at any time, including environmental hazards.
