O Allah, I ask You for its (this snowfall's) goodness, the goodness of what it contains, and the goodness of what it brings. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of what it contains, and the evil of what it brings. O Allah, make it a mercy and do not make it a punishment. O Allah, make it bring abundance and do not make it bring destruction.
When to Read
This supplication is particularly relevant when a heavy or unusual snowfall begins. It’s a way to acknowledge Allah's power over the elements and to seek His protection and blessings during times when weather conditions can be challenging or even dangerous. Reciting it at the onset of such weather shows our reliance on Allah and our hope for His mercy.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt conviction. Raise your hands if it is appropriate and safe to do so, as is customary with many supplications. Focus on the meaning of the words, understanding that Allah is the controller of all things, including the weather. It's recommended to recite it before the snowfall intensifies, but it can be recited at any point when seeking Allah's help during severe weather.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encompasses seeking the good aspects of the snowfall, asking for the well-being of those affected by it, and requesting protection from its potential harm. It also clarifies our intention, asking for Allah's mercy and blessings rather than His punishment, and for beneficial outcomes instead of destructive ones. This reflects a deep understanding of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and reliance on Him, acknowledging that even seemingly harsh natural events are under His command and can be turned into a source of good through our supplication.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us supplications for various situations, including seeking protection from adverse weather. While a specific hadith solely on excessive snowfall protection is combined within general weather supplications, the principle of seeking Allah's good and refuge from His evil is established. This particular phrasing is attributed to seeking the good and protection from the 'city' or 'place' and what it contains, which can be adapted to the phenomenon of snowfall impacting a region. The essence is captured in seeking the best from Allah and protection from harm, a universal principle in His supplications.
