اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِشْنَا مَسَاكِينَ، وَأَمِتْنَا مَسَاكِينَ، وَاحْشُرْنَا فِي زُمْرَةِ المَسَاكِينِ

O Allah, let us live as the poor, and let us die as the poor, and gather us on the Day of Resurrection amongst the poor.

Allahumma ah yinaa masaakeena, wa amittanaa masaakeena, wa hshurnaa fee zumrati-l-masaakeen.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant when facing widespread crop destruction or infestations of locusts and other pests that threaten livelihoods and food security. It is also a general supplication for humility and reliance on Allah, which can be made at any time, especially during times of hardship.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. It is recommended to raise one's hands slightly while making the supplication. Focus on the meaning, acknowledging our dependence on Allah for sustenance and protection, even in abundance. Understanding the context of the hadith, which describes the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ's own humility and desire to be with the poor in the Hereafter, can enhance the feeling behind the dua.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua, although seemingly about poverty, is deeply connected to protection and provision. By asking to live, die, and be resurrected with the poor, the Prophet ﷺ was seeking protection from the arrogance and heedlessness that can accompany wealth. He understood that true contentment and closeness to Allah are often found in humility and reliance. When facing calamities like locusts that threaten sustenance, acknowledging our need for Allah's provision, just as the truly poor do, can invoke His mercy and protection. It fosters a mindset of gratitude and dependence, which are powerful shields against hardship.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'O Allah, let us live as the poor, and let us die as the poor, and gather us on the Day of Resurrection amongst the poor.' He said: 'Aishah said: 'Why, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Because they will enter Paradise before the rich, by half a day, which is five hundred years.'
