O Allah, let it rain around us, not upon us. O Allah, let it rain on hills, on mountains, in the valleys, and on the places where trees grow.
Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna, Allahumma 'alal-akāmi wadh-dhirābi, wa butoonil-awdiyati, wa manābitish-shajari.
When to Read
This dua is specifically recited when the rain is becoming too intense, or when there's a fear of flooding due to heavy downpours. It’s a prayer to shift the severe effects of the rain away from inhabited areas and towards places that can absorb it without causing harm, such as hills, mountains, valleys, and places of vegetation, which are naturally designed to handle water flow.
How to Read
Recite this supplication with sincerity and a sincere intention for protection. While it's often associated with the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ supplications during rain, the essence is to call upon Allah for relief and protection during severe weather. It's best recited when you observe the rain intensifying to a worrying degree. Imagine the benefits of the rain being distributed constructively, not destructively.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua teaches us the importance of seeking Allah's help even in natural phenomena, acknowledging His power over all things. It demonstrates a practical understanding of asking for the benefits of rain without the associated harms of excessive downpours and potential floods. By asking for the rain to be directed to areas that can sustain it, we are essentially asking for a balanced distribution of Allah's blessings and protection from His potential tests.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'We were with the Prophet (ﷺ) while a cloud passed over them. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Do you know what this is?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'Allah is saying: 'A blessed rain, a mercy.' And he said: 'Allah said: 'A group of My slaves believed in Me and a group disbelieved.' As for those who said: 'We are given rain by virtue of such and such a star,' they are those who disbelieve in Me and believe in the stars. And as for those who said: 'We are given rain by the Grace of Allah and His Mercy,' they are believers in Me and disbelievers in the stars.' Anas added: 'While the Prophet (ﷺ) was talking, the rain started to fall on the ground. On this, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'O Allah, let it rain around us and not upon us.' So, the cloud dispersed from over Medina and rained all around them.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1013)
