Weather & Nature
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5090

O Allah, I ask You for the good of it (the wind/storm/event) and the good of what is in it and the good of what it was sent with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what is in it and the evil of what it was sent with. O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness of the heart at death, and I ask You for the pleasure of looking at Your Face, and I ask You for the longing to meet You.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma fiha wa khayra ma ursilat bihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha wa sharri ma ursilat bihi. Allahumma inni as'aluka thabat al-qalbi 'ind al-mawt, wa as'aluka ladhdhat an-nadhar ila Wajhik, wa as'aluka ash-shawqa ila liqa'ik.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is particularly relevant when facing severe weather events like earthquakes, strong winds, or landslides. It can be recited when such natural phenomena occur, or even preemptively during times of increased natural activity. The latter part of the dua, asking for steadfastness at death and longing to meet Allah, is a general supplication for a good end and a strong connection with the Creator, making it beneficial to recite at any time, especially before sleep or during moments of reflection.

How to Read

Recite with sincere intention and deep reflection on the meaning of the words. Raise your hands as you would during other supplications, if appropriate for the situation. Focus on the feeling of reliance on Allah and His power over all creation, especially during frightening natural events. Acknowledge His control and seek His mercy and protection. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic clearly, while the translation guides your heart's plea.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection by seeking the good and refuge from the evil associated with natural events. It acknowledges Allah's complete dominion over them. Furthermore, it connects worldly protection with the ultimate concern: a good end. By asking for steadfastness at death, the pleasure of seeing Allah's Face, and longing for Him, the dua elevates our focus beyond immediate physical danger to spiritual preparedness and ultimate success in the Hereafter. This reflects the Sunnah of seeking both worldly and eternal well-being.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): When a strong wind blew, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: 'O Allah, I ask You for the good of it and the good of what is in it and the good of what it was sent with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what is in it and the evil of what it was sent with. O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness of the heart at death, and I ask You for the pleasure of looking at Your Face, and I ask You for the longing to meet You.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5090). The scholars have also mentioned that the first part of this dua, 'O Allah, I ask You for the good of it...', can be applied to other events and calamities, seeking goodness and refuge from harm, which includes natural disasters like landslides and earthquakes.
