On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Seven [types of people] Allah will shade with His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His: the just ruler; a young person who grew up in the worship of Allah; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love each other for Allah's sake, meeting and parting upon that; a man whom a woman of rank and beauty invited [for an illegal act] but he said, 'I fear Allah'; a man who gives charity and conceals it so much that his left hand does not know what his right hand spends; and a man who remembers Allah when he is alone and his eyes are flooded with tears.'

‘An Abī Hurayrata – radiyallāhu ‘anhu – ‘ani an-Nabiyyi ﷺ qāla: "Sab’atun yuẓilluhumu Allāhu fī ẓillihi yawma lā ẓilla illā ẓilluhu: al-imāmu al-‘ādilu, wa shābbun nasha’a fī ‘ibādati Rabbihī, wa rajulun qalbuhi mu‘allaqun fī al-masājidi, wa rajulāni taḥābbā fī Allāhi ijtama‘ā ‘alayhi wa tafarraqā ‘alayhi, wa rajulun ṭalabathu imra’atun dhātu manṣibin wa jamālin faqāla innī akhāfu Allāh, wa rajulun taṣaddaqa akhfā ḥattā lā ta‘lama shimāluhu mā tunfiqu yamīnuhu, wa rajulun dhakara Allāha khāliyan fa fāḍat ‘aynāhu."

When to Read

This narration highlights specific individuals who will be granted Allah's shade. While it's not a specific dua to recite at a particular time, it serves as a profound reminder. We should internalize these qualities and strive to embody them in our lives. Reflecting on these seven types of people can motivate us to cultivate them within ourselves, seeking Allah's pleasure and His shade on the Day of Judgment. It's a call to action for continuous self-improvement in our worship, character, and dealings with others.

How to Read

This isn't a specific spoken dua in the traditional sense. Instead, it's a description of deeds and states of being that earn Allah's shade. The 'reading' here involves understanding the meaning, reflecting on its implications for our own lives, and making a sincere intention to strive towards embodying these characteristics. It's about living by these principles so that we may, by Allah's grace, be among those who are shaded.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit is the immense reward of being shaded by Allah Himself on the Day of Judgment, a day when the sun will be extremely close, causing immense distress and heat. This divine shade is a sign of Allah's mercy and pleasure with the individual. The hadith itself enumerates the virtuous actions and states that lead to this great reward, encouraging Muslims to actively pursue justice, devotion in worship, community connection through the mosque, sincere love for the sake of Allah, chastity, selfless charity, and deep remembrance of Allah.
