Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah, who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any power or strength from myself.

Alhamdulillahil-ladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin.

When to Read

This dua is recited when putting on any new clothing, including wedding attire. For a wedding, it's particularly meaningful as you're wearing something special for a blessed occasion. You can recite it before or as you put on your wedding outfit, or even when gifting new clothes to the bride or groom.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and mindfulness. As you put on the new garment, acknowledge that the ability to acquire and wear it is from Allah. It's a moment to express gratitude and humility, recognizing that all blessings flow from Him. For a wedding, you can also extend its spirit to wish the couple well, acknowledging Allah as the Provider of their union and happiness.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies a beautiful aspect of gratitude and tawakkul (reliance on Allah). By reciting it, we acknowledge that our blessings, even something as simple as clothing, are gifts from Allah, not due to our own might or effort. This fosters humility and strengthens our connection with our Creator. When worn for a wedding, it invokes Allah's blessings not only on oneself but also implicitly on the joyous occasion and the union being celebrated, as Allah is the source of all provisions and happiness.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) wore a new garment, he would mention its name, whether a shirt or a turban, and then say: 'O Allah, You have clothed me with the best of them, so clothe me in Paradise.' When he wore a garment he disliked, he would say: 'O Allah, You have clothed me with it, so conceal my nakedness and grant me good in it.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4020). Another narration by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri states: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever wears a garment for the sake of Allah, Allah will grant him its like in Paradise.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4021). Umm Salamah narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) wore a shirt on his right side and then on his left side; and he said: 'Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated to us, and these two were among the most virtuous of the companions, that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whosoever wears a garment and says: *Alhamdulillah alladhi kafani wa 'azani mimma yutini 'alayhi walahawla wa la quwwata wa illabillah* (All praise is due to Allah, who sufficed me and gave me [what is enough for me] from what is bestowed upon me, and there is no might nor power except with Allah), it shall be a means of protection for him.' (This narration is considered Hasan by many scholars, found in collections like Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3584 but the specific wording for 'new clothing' is more established in Abu Dawud 4023). The specific dua 'Alhamdulillahil-ladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin' is widely taught and practiced for new clothing, with its basis in the general principle of thanking Allah for provision and sustenance.
