Dua for Dressing Children Modestly

Wearing Clothes
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4018

O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it is created with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it is created with.

Allahumma inni as'aluka min khayriha wa khayri ma jubilat 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jubilat 'alayhi.

When to Read

This dua is recited when wearing new clothes. While there isn't a specific dua for *dressing children* modestly, we can use this general dua for new garments when putting clothes on them. More importantly, instilling modesty in our children is a continuous effort, not limited to a specific dua. It involves teaching them the principles of hijab, appropriate dress for different situations, and the importance of humility and good character from a young age. Making dua for them regularly, asking Allah to guide them to modest dress and character, is a vital part of this upbringing.

How to Read

This dua is traditionally recited when putting on a new garment. When dressing a child, you would recite this dua while helping them put on their clothes, especially if they are new or for a special occasion. Focus on the meaning and sincerity, asking Allah to bless the garment and protect the child. Remember that teaching children modesty is also about setting a good example and explaining the wisdom behind it.

Virtues & Benefits

Wearing new clothes is a blessing from Allah. This dua acknowledges that blessing and seeks protection from any potential harm or misuse associated with the garment. By extending this to our children, we are asking Allah to bless their attire and guide them towards embodying the qualities of modesty, which is highly valued in Islam. Modesty in dress is linked to purity of heart and conduct, reflecting inner character and seeking Allah's pleasure.

And it was narrated from him that he said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'Whoever wears a garment for the sake of display and a garment for the sake of showing off, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.' It was narrated from him that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'When one of you wears a garment, he should name it, and when he takes it off, he should take it off with his left hand, and when he wears it, he should wear it with his right hand.' And he said: 'If you wear a garment and a thing, then praise Allah for it, then say: *Allahumma inni as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri ma jubilat 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma jubilat 'alayhi.* (O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it is created with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it is created with.) And when you take off a garment, take it off with your left hand and say: *Allahumma a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma jubilat 'alayhi.* (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it is created with.)'
