Dua When Wearing New Clothes

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately after putting on a new garment, whether it's a shirt, trousers, a scarf, or any other piece of clothing. It’s a beautiful moment to connect with Allah, acknowledging His blessings as you adorn yourself.

How to Read

Recite this clearly and with sincerity after you have fully put on the new garment. Feel the gratitude in your heart for this provision from Allah. Some scholars mention that upon reciting this, the old garment worn should be given away in charity if possible, as a further act of thankfulness.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of gratitude. It acknowledges that all provision and ability comes from Allah alone, not from our own might. By reciting it, we remind ourselves that even something as simple as new clothes is a blessing from our Creator. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to instill humility and thankfulness in us, turning a mundane act into an act of worship. It helps us to remember that Allah grants us sustenance and the ability to utilize it, and that true strength lies only with Him.

Source & Authentication

Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: When any one of you performs Wudu’ and completes the Wudu’ he has, then he says: ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. O Allah, make me among the repentant and make me among the purified.’ Then the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever he wishes. And when any one of you puts on a garment and says: ‘Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah’ (All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part), then all the sins that he has committed from the past will be forgiven.’
