O Allah, all praise is due to You. You have clothed me with it. I ask You for its good and the good for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil for which it was made.
Allahumma lakal-hamdu Anta kasawtanihi, as'aluka min khairihi wa khairi ma suni'a lahu, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu.
When to Read
The Prophet ﷺ taught us this beautiful dua specifically for those moments when we put on a **new garment**. It’s a chance to pause, acknowledge Allah’s immense blessing in providing us with clothing, and consciously seek His protection. While the explicit instruction is for *new* clothes, the underlying principle of seeking Allah's goodness and protection from all our provisions is something we can carry into every day, fostering a more mindful approach to even the simple act of getting dressed.
How to Read
Recite this dua with presence and reflection as you don your new piece of clothing. Let your heart be engaged, truly acknowledging that Allah is the Provider and Protector. It’s more than just uttering words; it’s a profound moment of **gratitude (Shukr)** and **reliance (Tawakkul)** upon Allah for every aspect of our lives, transforming an ordinary action into a powerful act of worship.
Virtues & Benefits
Through this dua, we affirm Allah as the Ultimate Source of all our sustenance, including the clothes that adorn and protect us. The phrase, 'I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil for which it was made,' is a comprehensive plea for safeguarding. This plea is wonderfully expansive and can encompass various forms of harm that might be associated with the garment or its use: * **Protection from Material and Physical Harm**: This could involve protection from the garment itself causing issues, such as severe allergic reactions or, from a contemporary perspective, harm from any residual or inherent toxic chemicals used in its manufacturing process. * **Protection from Accidental Dangers**: While the Prophet ﷺ didn't explicitly detail modern dangers, seeking refuge from 'evil' is a broad request for Allah to shield us from unforeseen incidents. This could certainly extend to dangers like the garment catching fire, or any other accidental harm that might befall us while wearing it. It’s a holistic request for Allah’s safeguarding. * **Protection from Spiritual Harm**: Beyond physical dangers, the 'evil' of a garment can also subtly refer to spiritual pitfalls. For instance, it could be protection from the garment inciting **pride (kibr)**, **vanity**, or excessive **extravagance**, which can distract us from Allah and lead to sin. By making this dua, we infuse a simple daily act with deep spiritual significance, reinforcing our connection to Allah and our absolute reliance on His care.
