O Allah, praise be to You as You have clothed me with it. I ask You for its good and the good for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil for which it was made.
Allahumma lakal-hamdu kama kasawtanihi. As'aluka khairahu wa khaira ma suni'a lahu, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu.
When to Read
This beautiful dua is specifically recommended by the Prophet ﷺ to be recited when you put on a **new garment**, whether it's a shirt, a turban, or any other piece of clothing. It's a moment to pause and acknowledge Allah's blessing of new attire, seeking its inherent goodness and protection from its potential harms. While the context is new clothes, the spirit of seeking good and protection can certainly extend to our general reflection on the purpose of all our clothing.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity, allowing your heart to acknowledge Allah's immense favor in providing you with sustenance and adornment. Understand the profound meaning of seeking good and refuge from evil associated with your clothing. Reflect on the blessings you have, and the purpose of dressing in Islam – for modesty, protection, and beauty that pleases Allah, not for show or sin. Let it be a conscious act of submission and gratitude.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua allows us to acknowledge Allah's favor in providing us with clothing, a fundamental blessing. By asking for its good (`khairahu`) and the good for which it was made (`khaira ma suni'a lahu`), we are essentially praying that our clothes serve their intended purpose: covering our 'awrah, protecting us, and beautifying us in a permissible way. More profoundly, by seeking refuge from its evil (`sharrihi`) and the evil for which it was made (`sharri ma suni'a lahu`), we are consciously asking Allah to protect us from any negative consequences or temptations associated with clothing. This includes protection from: * **Vanity and Arrogance:** That our clothes do not lead us to pride, showing off (riya'), or looking down upon others. * **Immodesty (Tabarruj):** That our attire does not become a means of unlawful display or attracting forbidden gazes, which can be a gateway to greater immorality. * **Misuse or Sinful Intent:** That our clothes are not used to facilitate disobedience, or that the intentions behind our dressing are pure and not aimed at illicit attraction or flaunting wealth. In essence, this dua becomes a powerful shield, redirecting our focus from mere aesthetics to the spiritual dimension of clothing, reminding us to use this blessing in a way that pleases Allah and protects us from the whispers that lead to immorality and major sins like *zina* (adultery/fornication) by guarding the preliminary steps.

Narrated Abu Sa'id al-Khudri: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) put on a new garment, he would name it with its name, whether it was a shirt, turban or cloak, then say: 'O Allah, praise be to You as You have clothed me with it. I ask You for its good and the good for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil for which it was made.'
