Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to wear a new garment, he would mention its name (like) a shirt or a turban, and then say: 'Alhamdulillah alladhi kafani wa 'awwani (All praise is due to Allah Who sufficed me and gave me that with which I can protect myself). Then he would say: 'A'udhu bi-kilamati-llahi at-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created).' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4024, graded Hasan). Another narration from 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever wears a new garment and says: Al-hamdulillah alladhi kafani wa razaqani min al-lawn ma kana, yughfaru lahu ma taqaddama min dhanbihi (All praise is due to Allah Who sufficed me and provided for me from this color which is pleasing, his past sins are forgiven).' This narration is slightly different in wording but conveys a similar theme of gratitude and seeking forgiveness. The version cited in the main entry (Sunan Tirmidhi 1767, graded Hasan) is the most widely adopted for wearing any new garment: 'Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwatin' (All praise is due to Allah Who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself).
