O Allah, praise is to You. You have clothed me with it. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness for which it was made, and I seek refuge with You from its evil and the evil for which it was made.
Allahumma lakal-hamd. Anta kasawtanihi. As'aluka min khairihi wa khairi ma suni'a lahu, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu.
When to Read
Imagine the feeling of putting on a brand new outfit. It’s fresh, clean, and perhaps even exciting. This beautiful dua is specifically for that moment – when you wear a new garment for the very first time. It’s a way to acknowledge Allah's immense blessing for providing you with clothing, and to set a good intention for how you will use this provision. While specifically for new clothes, the underlying principle of gratitude and seeking Allah's blessing in all aspects of our dress should be a constant companion.
How to Read
When you put on a new piece of clothing, take a moment. Pause before you fully get ready for the day. Start with 'Bismillah' (In the Name of Allah), then recite this dua with sincerity. The words are straightforward, yet profound. Reflect on the meaning as you say them: acknowledge Allah as the Giver of all provisions, express your gratitude, and consciously ask Him for the goodness embedded in this garment while seeking protection from anything harmful that might come from it. It’s more than just uttering words; it's a heartfelt conversation with your Creator.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua transforms a simple act of wearing clothes into an act of worship. First, you are expressing **gratitude** to Allah, recognizing that every comfort, including your clothing, is from Him alone. This deepens your sense of *shukr*. Second, you are actively seeking **blessings** for the garment itself – its longevity, its comfort, and that it serves its purpose of covering your 'awrah and providing warmth righteously. Perhaps most profoundly, you are seeking **protection** from its 'evil'. What could be the evil of a garment? It’s not the fabric itself, but how we might use it: arrogance, showing off, heedlessness, or dressing in a way that displeases Allah. This dua encourages us to approach dress with humility and purpose, much like the noble Companions (Sahaba) who understood that clothing was a provision to be used in Allah's obedience. They were not extravagant, nor did they neglect cleanliness and adornment within Islamic guidelines. When you recite this dua, you are essentially asking Allah to help you emulate their balanced approach: to be grateful for the clothing He provides, to wear it modestly and with dignity, and to protect you from the pitfalls of vanity or heedlessness. It’s a powerful reminder that even our attire can be a means of drawing closer to Allah.
