Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any might from me nor power.

Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This dua is recited when wearing new clothes, whether for a formal gathering, everyday wear, or any occasion where you put on something new. It's particularly poignant when dressing for an event where you wish to present yourself well, acknowledging that Allah is the ultimate provider of such blessings.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely when you put on the new garment. It's a moment of personal gratitude, so a quiet, reflective recitation is appropriate. Understand the meaning: you are acknowledging that this new attire is a blessing from Allah, not due to your own effort or status.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua expresses profound gratitude to Allah for His blessings. It teaches humility by recognizing that all provisions, including clothing, come from Him. This acknowledgment can bring barakah (blessings) to the garment and protect the wearer from arrogance, which can be a pitfall when dressing for important events. It reminds us to seek Allah's pleasure in all aspects of our lives, even in our attire.

Source & Authentication

‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever wears a new garment and says: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah (All praise is due to Allah who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any might from me nor power), then Allah will forgive him his previous sins.' (Graded Hasan by Al-Tirmidhi and Sahih by Al-Albani in Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud).
