الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ
All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, without any strength on my part nor any power.
Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin
When to Read
Recited upon wearing any new garment, whether it's a simple shirt, a protective jacket against the elements, or any clothing that covers the 'awrah. It's a moment to acknowledge Allah's provision.
How to Read
This dua is best recited immediately after putting on the new garment. It’s an act of gratitude, so say it with sincerity and awareness of Allah's blessings. It's also recommended to mention the old garment you've just taken off (if applicable) with a similar dua: 'Subhanakallohumma, labastu hadha min tana'ilika wa astan'intuka bihi fa'tini bihi min khairihi wa khairi ahlihi wa aw'idhni min sharrihi wa sharri ahlihi wa shari ma suni'a lah' (Glory be to You, O Allah! I wear this out of Your bounty, and seek Your protection with it. So grant me its goodness and the goodness of its people, and protect me from its evil and the evil of its people and from the evil of what it was made for).
Virtues & Benefits
This dua fulfills several beautiful purposes. Firstly, it's a profound expression of gratitude for the blessing of clothing, which protects our bodies and preserves our modesty. Secondly, it acknowledges that all provision comes from Allah alone, humbling us and strengthening our reliance on Him. This recognition ensures that our blessings are not taken for granted and helps us maintain a conscious connection with our Creator in our daily lives.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: When the Prophet (ﷺ) wore a new garment, he would mention it by name, be it a shirt or a cloak, and then say: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ (Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin). And when he took off a garment, he would say: سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبِسْتُ هَذَا مِنْ تَنَاعُمِكَ وَاسْتَعَنْتُ بِهِ مِنْ فِضْلِكَ فَأْتِنِي بِهِ مِنْ خَيْرِهِ وَخَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ وَأَعِذْنِي مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ (Subhanakallohumma, labastu hadha min tana'ilika wa astan'intuka bihi fa'tini bihi min khairihi wa khairi ahlihi wa aw'idhni min sharrihi wa sharri ahlihi wa shari ma suni'a lah). — Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1771
