Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ.

All praise is for Allah Who has clothed me in this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when putting on any new piece of clothing, whether it's a shirt, pants, a cloak, or even socks. While there isn't a specific dua solely for rainy days or for wearing clothes on such days, this general dua for wearing new clothes is perfect. When it's raining, we often put on extra layers or specific waterproof clothing. Saying this dua while wearing those new rain-appropriate clothes acknowledges Allah's blessing in providing them and protecting us from the elements. It's a moment to pause and express gratitude, especially when the weather itself might bring discomfort or the risk of illness.

How to Read

Recite this dua immediately after you have finished putting on the new garment. Hold onto the garment, perhaps touching it with your right hand, and recite it with sincerity and presence of mind. Focus on the meaning – acknowledging that this provision is from Allah alone, not due to your own might or effort. This practice is a beautiful way to turn a mundane act into an act of worship and gratitude.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon wearing new clothes offers several profound benefits. Firstly, it fosters immense gratitude (shukr) towards Allah. By acknowledging that the provision comes from Him without our own power, we cultivate humility and recognize our complete dependence on our Creator. Secondly, it invites Allah's continued blessings and protection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua, and by following his Sunnah, we seek Allah's favor. While this specific dua is for wearing new clothes, the general principle applies: gratitude and remembrance of Allah when facing the elements (like rain) can bring comfort and protection. The feeling of being covered and protected from the rain can be seen as a manifestation of Allah's provision, making this an opportune time to express this gratitude.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: When one of you puts on a garment, he should mention Allah's Name. Then he should say: 'Al-hamdu lillah alladhi kafani wa 'az-zani wa 'arazaqani' (All praise is for Allah Who sufficed me and protected me and provided me with it). And it is recommended to say: 'Al-hamdu lillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.' (All praise is for Allah Who clothed me in this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself.) *Note: Different narrations mention slightly different phrasings, but the core meaning of gratitude for the clothing provided by Allah remains consistent. The version provided in the main entry is widely recognized and recommended.*
