Dua for Wearing New Clothes: Gratitude and Protection

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, though I had no power nor strength (myself).

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited when wearing a new garment. It's a beautiful expression of gratitude to Allah for providing you with clothing, acknowledging that it's a blessing from Him, not due to your own effort.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity as you put on the new clothing. It's a moment to pause and recognize Allah's favor. Imagine the clothes as a blessing, and feel the gratitude welling up inside you as you speak the words.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua teaches us humility and gratitude. It reinforces the belief that all provisions come from Allah alone, and reminds us that we are dependent on His grace. This acknowledgment of His bounty can lead to greater blessings and protection, as gratitude is a key to increased favors from the Almighty.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: When you wear a new garment, praise Allah, thank Him, and then say: 'Glory be to Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of this garment and the evil of what it was made for.' Then praise Allah and thank Him, and then say: 'All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, though I had no power nor strength (myself).' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, graded Hasan by some scholars; also found in Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767, graded Hasan Gharib). *Note: While the longer version includes seeking refuge, the core gratitude part is emphasized here as specifically for 'wearing' the clothes. The essence remains acknowledging Allah's provision.
