Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawood, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 4023, 1767

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is for Allah who clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me without any strength or power from my side.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited when wearing a new garment or any new clothing. It is a beautiful way to express gratitude to Allah for His blessings and acknowledge that all provision comes from Him alone. Imagine the feeling of putting on a new shirt, a warm coat, or even fresh socks – at that very moment, this is the perfect dua to utter.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a grateful heart as you put on the new clothing. It's a moment to pause and recognize Allah's favor upon you. Even if the clothing isn't brand new but is being worn after a long time, or is simply new to you, this dua remains relevant as a token of gratitude. The intention behind the utterance is key – acknowledging Allah's grace and your dependence on Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua serves multiple profound purposes: Firstly, it's a powerful expression of gratitude (shukr) to Allah for the blessing of clothing, which is a basic necessity for modesty and protection. Secondly, it acknowledges our utter dependence on Allah, realizing that no worldly possession or ability comes from our own might, but from His immense grace. This humility can lead to increased blessings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua, indicating its importance in seeking Allah's continued favor and protection.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever wears a garment and says: 'Al-hamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah' (All praise is for Allah who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from my side), then his past sins will be forgiven.' - Sunan Abi Dawood 4023, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1767. The wording in Tirmidhi is slightly different but conveys the same meaning: 'The Prophet ﷺ was brought a garment to wear. He wore it and said: 'Alhamdulillah, antas-kasawtanihi...' (Praise be to Allah, You have clothed me with it...).'
