Dua for Wearing Clothes: Seeking Protection from Hypocrisy and Allah's Blessings

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, without any strength or power on my part.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This dua is recited when wearing a new garment, or any garment for that matter. It’s a beautiful moment to pause and acknowledge that all blessings, including the clothes that cover us, are from Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). It reminds us of our dependence on Him and His continuous provision.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity as you put on a new or any piece of clothing. It’s a simple yet profound expression of gratitude. While you can recite it mentally, saying it aloud with proper pronunciation is also beneficial. It's a practice that shifts our mindset from seeing the garment as merely fabric to recognizing it as a bounty from our Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua carries significant meaning. Firstly, it expresses **gratitude (shukr)** for the blessing of clothing, which is a fundamental necessity for protection, modesty, and dignity. By acknowledging that this provision is from Allah without our own might, we foster **humility**. Furthermore, this act of remembrance is a shield. Clothing can be a source of pride or even vanity. This dua helps ground us, reminding us that even this outward covering is a gift from Allah, thereby guarding against arrogance. It also implicitly seeks Allah's protection from the potential ill effects of adornment, such as drawing undue attention or falling into hypocrisy, where outward appearance might mask inner shortcomings. As the Quran mentions, 'And clothing is protection against the heat and provides you with protection from each other' (An-Nahl 16:81), highlighting the practical and protective nature of what we wear, a blessing we should never take for granted.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever wears a new garment and says: Al-hamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah, he will be forgiven his previous sins.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767). Some scholars have graded this hadith as Hasan.
