Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah, who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power from myself.

Al-hamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This dua is recited whenever you put on new clothes or even when wearing clothes you already own. It's a beautiful way to start the day or refresh your intention when dressing.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely with an understanding of its meaning. Acknowledge that Allah is the true source of all provisions and blessings, including the clothes you wear. It's typically recited after the garment is fully on, as it thanks Allah for the provision of that specific item.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is more than just words; it’s a declaration of reliance on Allah (Tawakkul). It reminds us that even our basic needs, like clothing, are blessings from Him, not achievements of our own power. This fosters humility and gratitude. Furthermore, by recognizing Allah's provision, we implicitly acknowledge His command for modesty and appropriate dress, making our outward appearance a reflection of our inner piety.

Source & Authentication

‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever wears a garment and says: Al-hamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah (All praise is due to Allah, who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power from myself), then all of his past sins will be forgiven." It was also narrated from Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When the Prophet (peace be upon him) acquired a new garment, he would mention its name (e.g. a turban or a shirt), then he would say: Al-hamdulillah alladhi kafani wa awani (All praise is due to Allah who sufficed me and gave me shelter). Then he would say: A'udhu billahi min sharrihi (I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of it)."
