الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ
All praise is for Allah who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any power or strength from myself.
Alḥamdu lillāhi alladhī kasanī hādhā al-thawba wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah.
When to Read
This beautiful dua is recited when you put on new clothes, or even when you put on existing clothes you are grateful for. It's a moment to pause and acknowledge Allah's blessings. The 'newness' of the garment isn't the primary trigger; it's the act of being clothed, a blessing we often take for granted. By reciting this, we open a door to recognizing Allah's provision in our daily lives, which naturally leads to reflecting on our actions and seeking His forgiveness.
How to Read
It's best to say this dua with sincerity and contemplation. As you put on the garment, feel the texture, feel its coverage, and connect that feeling to Allah's grace. The phrase 'min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah' (without any power or strength from myself) is key. It's an admission of our utter dependence on Allah for everything, including the ability to earn and wear clothes. This humility paves the way for seeking forgiveness. Consider this a micro-moment of reflection before you step out into the world, a reminder of your Creator's constant care.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to express gratitude for the blessing of clothing. Beyond simple thanks, this dua is profound because it acknowledges our complete reliance on Allah. When we recognize that our ability to acquire and wear clothes comes solely from Him, it fosters humility. This humility is a fertile ground for seeking forgiveness. By attributing the provision to Allah and recognizing our own weakness, we naturally become more mindful of our shortcomings and sins. This dua serves as a reminder that even seemingly simple blessings are from Allah, and being thankful for them can open the doors to His mercy and forgiveness for all our transgressions, spoken or unspoken.

Narrated Abu Sa'id al-Khudri: When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wore a new garment, he would mention its name (like shirt, turban, or cloak), and then say: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي مَا أُوَارِي بِهِ عَوْرَتِي وَأَتَجَمَّلُ بِهِ فِي حَيَاتِي. Then he would say: 'A'udhu billahi min sharrihi wa sharri ma ṣuni'a lah.' (I seek refuge in Allah from its evil and the evil of what it was made for). And when he wore a garment after fasting, he would say: 'Alḥamdu lillāhi alladhī ja'ala laka iddan wa kasāni mimma utawārī bihi.' (All praise is for Allah Who has made it a covering for me and has clothed me with what I conceal my nakedness with). [Note: The version provided in the main entry is the more widely recognized and directly applicable hadith for wearing any garment and acknowledging provision.]
