Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power from myself.

Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited just after you put on a new garment or any clothing. It's a moment of gratitude, acknowledging that this provision is from Allah alone, and a subtle reminder to seek His protection as you face the world in your new attire.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely with awareness of its meaning. It's a personal reflection and expression of gratitude to Allah. Feel the humility as you acknowledge His bounty without any effort on your part.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses several profound benefits: 1. **Gratitude (Shukr):** It's a direct expression of thankfulness to Allah for the blessing of clothing, which is a basic necessity for both covering our `awrah` and protecting us from the elements. 2. **Humility and Tawhid:** By attributing the provision of the garment to Allah and denying any strength or power of your own, you affirm the oneness of Allah (Tawhid) and your utter dependence on Him. This helps prevent arrogance that can sometimes accompany new possessions. 3. **Seeking Protection:** While not explicit in this particular dua, the act of remembering Allah's grace when adorning ourselves serves as a spiritual shield. The intention behind wearing clothes can be for modesty and to follow Allah's commands, which inherently offers protection from temptation. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught us to seek refuge in Allah from the evils that arise from our worldly attire, such as vanity or immodesty, which often stem from temptation. For example, the Prophet ﷺ also taught us to seek refuge in Allah from the heat of the Fire and the evil of the Day of Judgment when wearing new clothes, indicating the broader spiritual context of dressing.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever wears a garment for the first time and says: Praise be to Allah, Who has clothed me with what covers my nakedness and adorns me in my life. Then he said: Praise be to Allah, Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power from myself.' (Tirmidhi narrated it and said it is Hasan Gharib, and Abu Dawud narrated it with a similar chain and its narrators are trustworthy, graded Hasan).
