الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ
All praise is for Allah who clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me without any strength or power from my side.
Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.
When to Read
This dua should be recited when putting on any new or existing clothing, especially when wearing it for the first time. It's a beautiful way to start the day or any occasion where you are dressing, acknowledging Allah's provision and your dependence on Him.
How to Read
Recite this sincerely after putting on your clothes. Feel the gratitude in your heart for the blessing of covering your 'awrah and presenting yourself in a way that is pleasing to Allah. It's a personal reflection, so say it with quiet contemplation.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it cultivates profound gratitude (shukr) for Allah's blessings, recognizing that even the ability to wear clothes is from Him. Secondly, it acknowledges our own weakness and dependence on Allah (tawakkul), understanding that our strength and provision come solely from Him. By reciting this, we imbue the simple act of dressing with spiritual significance, turning a worldly necessity into an act of worship. This practice reminds us that our attire should also be a means of pleasing Allah, reflecting modesty and good character, as mentioned in the Quran: 'O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best...' (Al-A'raf 7:26).
Source & Authentication
Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet ﷺ said: When the son of Adam wakes up in the morning, all his limbs show humility to the tongue, and they say: 'Fear Allah for our sake, for we are with you.' If you are upright, we are upright; if you are crooked, we are crooked. When one of you wears a garment and clothes his body, he should say: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ (Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah). And when he puts on a garment he should like it to be from his right side. (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023). Another narration states: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever wears a garment and says: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا وَعَافَانِي مِنْهُ وَتَجَوَّفَهُ saying this three times, then it is a right upon Allah that He gives him the reward of the martyr.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767, also mentioned in Adab Al-Mufrad, but the wording is slightly different, focusing on appreciation and health). The version from Sunan Abi Dawud is the most direct for the act of wearing the garment.
