Dua for Wearing Clothes: Seeking Allah's Concealment of Our Faults and Sins

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any power or strength from myself.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately after putting on a new garment, or any garment for that matter. It marks the beginning of wearing the clothing, acknowledging Allah's blessing for providing it and the ability to wear it.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with a heart full of gratitude. As you put on the garment, remember that Allah is the true Provider and the One who grants us the ability to do anything. The emphasis is on humility and recognizing our dependence on Him.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, we acknowledge that any provision, including clothing, is a blessing from Allah. It fosters gratitude and humility, reminding us that our strength and ability come from Him. It also implicitly asks Allah to 'clothe' us in His mercy and conceal our shortcomings, just as the garment conceals our bodies. This act of gratitude can also be a means for Allah to forgive our sins and grant us further blessings.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you puts on a garment, he should say: Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah. The part of the garment he wore was that which reached his two calves.' (Sunan Abu Dawud 4023). Another narration states: 'When the Prophet ﷺ wore a new shirt, he would mention it by name (e.g., shirt, robe, turban) and say: 'Alhamdulillah alladhi kafani wa awani, wa razaqani minhu ma utaawir'. (Praise be to Allah Who has sufficed me and sheltered me, and provided me with that with which I cover my nakedness). And when he wore a garment that was old, he would say: 'Alhamdu lillahi alladhi razaqani min al-libasi ma awari bihi 'awrati wa atajammalu bihi fi hayati.' (Praise be to Allah Who has provided me with clothing to cover my nakedness and adorn me in my life).' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767, he said it is Hasan Gharib).
