Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي رَزَقَنِي هَذَا مِنْ خَيْرٍ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

Praise be to Allah Who has provided me with this (clothing) without any strength from myself or power. And praise be to Allah Who has clothed me with it and provided it for me without any strength from myself or power.

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi razaqani hadha min ghayri hawlin minni wala quwwatin, walhamdulillahil-ladhi kasani hadha warazaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wala quwwatin.

When to Read

This dua is recited when wearing new clothes, or any clothing that makes you feel presentable, especially before heading out for important occasions like Jumu'ah prayer or any congregational prayer.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and gratitude as you put on your clean clothes. It's an expression of thanks to Allah for the blessing of covering and adorning yourself, acknowledging that all provision comes from Him alone. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make this type of dua when acquiring something new.

Virtues & Benefits

Wearing clean and presentable clothes for prayer is a Sunnah. Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: 'It is a right of Allah that He should give whoever performs Wudu the best of His provision, and the best of His provision are the clothes.' (Sahih Muslim 1144). Reciting this dua before wearing clothes is a way to acknowledge Allah's grace in providing for you, and it imbues the act of dressing with remembrance of Him, making even a mundane act an act of worship.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person wears a garment and says: Praise be to Allah Who has clothed me with what covers my nakedness and adorns me in my life. Then he says: Praise be to Allah Who has provided me with this (clothing) without any strength from myself or power, then Allah forgives his past and future sins.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767). Note: The Arabic provided in the main entry is a more comprehensive version often recited for wearing clothes, including the part for new clothes.
