Dua for Protection from Disgrace and Shame Through Clothing

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4022

O Allah, I ask You for the good of it and the good of what it is for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it is for.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayrahu wa khayra ma huwa lah, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma huwa lah

When to Read

This dua is recited when putting on new clothes or any clothing. It encompasses seeking the good of the garment and what it represents (e.g., modesty, protection, presenting oneself well) and seeking protection from any potential harm or negative consequences associated with it, such as pride, immodesty, or revealing what should be covered.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and reflection as you put on the garment. Place your right hand on the part of the body where the garment is worn, as is the general etiquette for wearing new things, and say the dua. Focus on the intention of seeking Allah's blessings and protection in this simple act.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, we acknowledge that even something as seemingly mundane as clothing can have potential good and ill. We proactively seek Allah's protection from any pride or arrogance that new clothes might bring, or from the shame that could result from improper or revealing attire. It's a comprehensive supplication for the garment to serve its intended purpose of protection and modesty, and to guard us against its potential negative aspects. This practice aligns with the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ teachings to seek good and protection in all matters, big and small.

Source & Authentication

The narration states that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wore a new garment, he would mention its name (like a shirt or a cloak) and then say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayrahu wa khayra ma huwa lah, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma huwa lah.' (O Allah, I ask You for the good of it and the good of what it is for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it is for.) — Sunan Abi Dawud 4022. While the wording is slightly different in some accounts, the essence of seeking the good and refuge from the evil of the new garment is consistent. This specific wording from Abu Dawud is classified as Hasan.
