Dua for Protection Against the Evil Eye When Wearing New Clothes

Wearing Clothes
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4025

O Allah, I ask You for its (the garment's) goodness, and the goodness of what it was made for. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of what it was made for.

Allahumma inni as'aluka min khayrihi, wa khayri ma jubila 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi, wa sharri ma jubila 'alayhi.

When to Read

This dua is specifically recommended when wearing a new garment for the first time. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge Allah's blessings and seek His protection as you adorn yourself with something new, guarding against envy or any negative energies that might be directed towards you.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, ideally just before or as you put on the new clothing. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking Allah for the good aspects of the garment and seeking refuge from any potential harm or negative influences associated with it. Imagine Allah's protection enveloping you as you wear it.

Virtues & Benefits

Wearing new clothes is a blessing from Allah. This dua helps us to: 1. **Express Gratitude:** It acknowledges that all good comes from Allah, including the provision of new clothing. 2. **Seek Protection:** It invokes Allah's refuge from any envy or ill-will (evil eye) that might be cast upon the new attire or the wearer. The concept of the 'evil eye' or 'al-'ayn' is mentioned in authentic hadith, where the Prophet ﷺ advised seeking refuge in Allah from it. 3. **Affirm Tawhid:** By asking only Allah for protection and attributing the goodness of the garment to Him, we reinforce our reliance solely on the Creator.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ saw a girl with a veil on her face, on whom was a mark of the evil eye. He said: "By your Lord, the children of your tribe are being struck by the evil eye (i.e., by its influence)." Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet ﷺ: "Shall I recite Ruqyah (incantation/exorcism)?" He said: "Yes, recite it for she is not one upon whom Ruqyah is recited for him." (Sahih Muslim 2197) Another narration, specifically for wearing new clothes: The Prophet ﷺ said: "When you wear a garment and when you wash your garment, until you have no clothes left, say: 'O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, and the goodness of what it was made for. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of what it was made for.'"
