الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ
All praise is due to Allah, who clothed me in this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part.
Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah
When to Read
This dua should be recited when putting on a new garment or any garment, whether it’s a shirt, trousers, or any other item of clothing. It’s a beautiful moment to acknowledge Allah’s blessings as you cover yourself, recognizing that this covering is from Him alone.
How to Read
Recite this sincerely with an understanding of its meaning. The act of wearing the garment itself is the occasion for the dua. It's a personal reflection and gratitude offered to Allah.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is profound because it highlights our utter dependence on Allah for everything, including the ability to acquire and wear clothes. It serves as a reminder to attribute our blessings, like clothing which conceals our flaws and protects our modesty, to Allah’s grace. By reciting this, we express gratitude, acknowledging that we have no inherent power to obtain such provisions, thus fostering humility and deepening our reliance on the Creator. The mention of concealing flaws is particularly significant, as it connects the physical act of dressing with the spiritual need for Allah’s covering of our sins and shortcomings.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: When a man wears a new garment, he should say: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ. (Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.) 'All praise is due to Allah, who clothed me in this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part.' And when a person wears a garment after a long time, he should say the like of that. And when a person wears a garment and says: اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَنْتَ كَسَوْتَنِي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِهِ وَخَيْرِ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ (Allahumma lakal-hamdu anta kasawtani as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri ma suni'a lahu wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu) 'O Allah, praise be to You, You have clothed me. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.' — Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1767. The narration in Tirmidhi states it is Hasan Gharib.
