Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawud, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 4023, 1767

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah, who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part.

Al-hamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This dua should be recited immediately after putting on a new garment. It's a beautiful practice to remember Allah's blessings when adorning ourselves with something new, acknowledging that all provisions come from Him alone.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and mindfulness. Understand that the clothing, like all blessings, is a gift from Allah. Feel gratitude as you utter these words, recognizing your dependence on Him for even the simplest necessities. It's best recited as you finish dressing.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua when wearing a new garment brings immense reward. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever wears a new garment and then says: 'All praise is due to Allah, who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part,' Allah will forgive his previous sins.' (Sunan Abu Dawud 4023). It also fosters humility and gratitude, reminding us that our ability to acquire and wear clothes is solely by Allah's grace, preventing arrogance.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever wears a new garment and then says: 'Al-hamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah' (All praise is due to Allah, who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part), Allah will forgive his previous sins.' (Sunan Abu Dawud 4023). Another narration from Sunan At-Tirmidhi mentions a similar dua after wearing new clothes: 'O Allah, praise be to You, You have dressed me. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767). The dua provided in this entry is the more commonly cited one for new garments and its specific reward of forgiveness of past sins.
