Dua for Trusting Allah's Support During Times of Grief and Loss

Trust in Allah
Sahih HadithSahih Ibn Hibban 972

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, by which You have revealed it in Your Book, or You have taught it to any of Your creation, or which You have kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my grief, and a remover of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyatii bi-yadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uk. As'aluka bikulli-sm-in huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

How to Read

The beauty of this dua lies in its direct appeal to Allah using His own attributes and the profound connection to the Qur'an. When reciting, strive for sincere focus, understanding that you are acknowledging Allah's ultimate control and His boundless mercy. Raise your hands in supplication, especially when you feel the weight of your grief. Imagine the Qur'an not just as words on a page, but as a divine balm for your soul. Let the understanding that the Prophet ﷺ taught this specific prayer for such ailments sink in, and allow the sincerity of your heart to fuel your words.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication offers profound benefits, directly addressing the emotional and spiritual turmoil that accompanies grief and loss. By invoking Allah with names He has chosen for Himself and by asking Him to make the Qur'an the 'springtime of the heart,' it promises relief from sorrow and worry. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated that whoever says this dua during the day and dies that day before evening, he will be among the people of Jannah. And whoever says it at night and dies before morning, he will be among the people of Jannah. (Sahih Ibn Hibban 972). This highlights the immense reward for sincere reliance on Allah and seeking solace in His Book during times of distress.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "There is no one who is afflicted by any calamity and says 'We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return' and 'O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange,' but Allah will reward him for his affliction and give him something better than it in exchange." Then he said: "And what about 'O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange?'" He then said: "O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, by which You have revealed it in Your Book, or You have taught it to any of Your creation, or which You have kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my grief, and a remover of my worries." The Prophet ﷺ was asked: "Should we learn these words?" He said: "Yes, of course! He who learns them during the day, before evening he will have died, and he will be among the people of Jannah. And he who learns them at night, before morning he will have died, and he will be among the people of Jannah."
