Dua for Trusting Allah's Patience When Seeking a Lost Object

Trust in Allah
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5076

O Allah, the Restorer of the lost, and the Guide of the lost, guide me to my lost item, and return it to me by Your power and authority.

Allahumma rādda al-ḍāllati, wa hādiya al-ḍāllati, ihdinī 'alā ḍāllatī, wa-rudduhā 'alayya bi-qudratika wa sulṭānika.

When to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction when you have lost something important. It's not just about retrieving the object, but about connecting with Allah's attributes as the one who restores and guides, fostering patience and trust in His wisdom.

How to Read

Recite this dua with focus and humility. Visualize Allah's power to return what is lost. It is recommended to also perform two rak'ahs of prayer before making the dua, seeking Allah's help. Remember that the essence is the connection with Allah, so recite with a present heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a beautiful affirmation of Allah's ability to restore what has been taken or misplaced. By calling upon Him as 'Radd al-ḍāllah' (Restorer of the lost) and 'Hādi al-ḍāllah' (Guide of the lost), we acknowledge His supreme dominion over all things. It encourages patience and trust in His plan, reminding us that even in loss, Allah is the ultimate source of retrieval and guidance. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that whoever loses something should pray two rak'ahs and then recite this dua, indicating the efficacy of combining sincere supplication with prayer.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'A man lost a camel in the desert of Medina. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'If you lose your riding animal in a desert and you have nothing to do with it, then supplicate with these words: Allahumma rādda al-ḍāllati, wa hādiya al-ḍāllati, ihdinī 'alā ḍāllatī, wa-rudduhā 'alayya bi-qudratika wa sulṭānika. For it is from the command of Allah.' (Sunan Abi Dawud, 5076 - graded Hasan by some scholars). Another narration states: 'Whoever loses something, or misses his mount, he should perform Wudu' and two Rak'ahs of prayer, then say: O Allah, Lord of the heavens and what they overshadow, Lord of the earths and what they carry, I ask You by Your powerful command and Your noble countenance and Your encompassing might, that You restore my lost item to me. Verily, You know the way to it and its abode, and the extent of Your wisdom is its matter.' This version is attributed to a longer supplication, but the core message of seeking Allah's restoration remains the same.
