When to Read

When the wind blows strongly, or a storm approaches, it is a practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to seek Allah's protection. This applies to any weather event that might cause fear or harm, reminding us that true safety comes only from Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with full conviction that Allah is the only one who can protect you. It's recommended to say it when you feel the wind picking up or observe signs of an approaching storm. Raising your hands slightly while making dua is also a sunnah, though not strictly required for this specific supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This simple yet profound dua connects us directly to Allah during times of natural intensity. It embodies Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) and acknowledges His power over all creation. By seeking refuge, we are not passively wishing; we are actively engaging our faith and recognizing our dependence on the Almighty. The Prophet's ﷺ practice shows us how to turn to our Creator in all circumstances, big or small.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'If the wind became strong, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would say: O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, and the goodness of what is in it, and the goodness of what it has been sent with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it has been sent with.' [Sahih Muslim 899]. Another narration from Sunan Abi Dawud: 'If the wind blew strongly, he would say: O Allah, I ask You for its good and the good of what it contains and the good of what it was sent with. And I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it contains and the evil of what it was sent with.' [Sunan Abi Dawud 5086]. And when he saw a cloud that he disliked, he would turn away from it [in distress]. When it rained, he would say: 'O Allah, a beneficial rain.' [Sunan Abi Dawud 5087]. This specific dua, 'Audhu billahi min sharri ar-reeh', is a concise statement of seeking protection which is understood from the general practice of seeking refuge from the wind.
