Seeking Allah's Protection from Hailstorms

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, let it rain around us and not upon us. O Allah, let it rain on the hills, the rocks, the valleys, and the places where trees grow.

Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna, Allahumma 'alal akami wadh dhibabi, wa butoonil awdiyati, wa manabitish shajari

When to Read

This dua is recited when there is a fear of a destructive hailstorm or intense rain that could cause damage. It's a supplication to ask Allah to direct the harsh weather away from populated areas and towards places where it would be beneficial and less harmful, such as hills, valleys, and areas where vegetation can benefit from the water.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, raising your hands as is customary when making dua. The intention is to seek Allah's mercy and protection from harm, while also asking for His blessings to fall on the earth in a way that benefits it. It's a practical application of tawakkul (reliance on Allah) combined with seeking His help.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua demonstrates the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ compassion for his Ummah and his understanding of how to seek Allah's protection during natural events. By asking for the rain to fall on specific, less vulnerable areas, it shows a desire for Allah's blessings to be distributed wisely, avoiding destruction. It's a reminder that even in challenging weather, we turn to our Creator for safety and benefit.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The people of Najd requested Allah's Apostle ﷺ to make the weather good for them. He said, "O Allah, make their produce good and bestow it in their city (Medina)." He was asked: "Will you make it like the locusts which (in my eyes) resemble a camel's head and then fall down on the city, devastating it?" The Prophet ﷺ smiled and said, "O Allah, make it around us and not upon us." Then he recited: 'O Allah, let it rain around us and not upon us. O Allah, let it rain on the hills, the rocks, the valleys, and the places where trees grow.' So, the rain stopped falling on Medina and it rained all around it, and the people of Medina were delighted with it. The companions asked the Prophet ﷺ, "Have you commanded the wind to blow?" He said, "I have not commanded the wind, but I have not cared for that which I disliked." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306)
