Dua When Seeing Rain Clouds Approaching

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 899

O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness of what is in it, and the goodness of what it has been sent with. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it has been sent with.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khairaha wa khaira ma fiha wa khaira ma ursilat bihi. Wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha wa sharri ma ursilat bihi.

When to Read

This dua is recited when you see dark clouds gathering, especially if they appear to be bringing strong winds or heavy rain. It's a moment when the atmosphere shifts, and we turn to Allah for protection and benefit.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, looking towards the approaching clouds. It's a sign of acknowledging Allah's power over all natural phenomena and seeking His mercy. Make sure to pronounce the Arabic clearly.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates our humble reliance on Allah (Exalted is He) during a powerful natural event. It acknowledges that just as rain can be a source of immense blessing, it can also bring harm. By reciting this, we seek Allah's protection from any potential damage or hardship the weather might bring, while also asking for its benefits to be realized.

Source & Authentication

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When the wind blew strongly, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness of what is in it, and the goodness of what it has been sent with. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it has been sent with.' And when the sky became cloudy, he would forsake his standing (i.e., leave prayer) and turn to (as if) it were a roof, and if the rain fell, he would lie down until the wind subsided. And Aishah would mention that he said: 'The cloud is a mercy and it is also a punishment, so when you see it, may you remember its mercy and not remember its punishment.'
