Dua for Relief from Excessive Rain

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, let it rain around us and not upon us. O Allah, let it rain on the hills, on the mountains, in the valleys, and on the places where trees grow.

Allahumma hawawalayna wa la 'alayna, Allahumma 'alal-akami wadh-dhirabi, wa butunil-awdiyati, wa manabitish-shajari.

When to Read

This dua is recited when the rain becomes excessive and starts causing harm, such as flooding or damage. It's a plea to Allah to divert the intense downpour away from inhabited areas and towards places where it would be beneficial and less destructive.

How to Read

This supplication is best recited when witnessing the severity of the rain. Raising your hands is appropriate when making dua, though some scholars mention it may be omitted in certain situations like this one, focusing instead on earnest supplication. The focus should be on sincere reliance on Allah and understanding that He is the controller of all natural phenomena.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua reflects our submission to Allah's will and our trust in His mercy. It's a practical application of seeking divine help when faced with difficulties caused by natural events. By asking for the rain to be directed to fertile lands and valleys, we are indirectly asking for its benefits while seeking protection from its harm, a balanced request that shows wisdom.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that: While the Prophet (peace be upon him) was delivering a sermon on Friday, the people called him (asking him) to pray for rain. He said: 'O Allah, let it rain around us and not upon us.' He said this thrice. He added: 'O Allah, let it rain on the hills, on the mountains, in the valleys, and on the places where trees grow.' Anas said: 'So the rain stopped, and we went out with the Prophet (peace be upon him) walking in the sunshine.'
