When to Read
This dua is specifically recited during times of drought when the land is parched and in need of rain. It is a practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when he would supplicate for rain. It's appropriate to make this dua when you see the signs of severe dryness impacting agriculture, livestock, or the general environment.
How to Read
This is a direct supplication to Allah (SWT). The etiquette includes raising your hands, facing the Qiblah if possible, and expressing sincere need and reliance on Allah. The repetition emphasizes the urgency and earnestness of the request. It is also beneficial to combine this with seeking forgiveness for any sins, as rain is often linked to repentance.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain in times of drought is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It demonstrates our reliance on Allah for all provisions, including the essential element of water that sustains life. The Quran mentions the significance of rain as a mercy from Allah: 'And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things' (Al-An'am 6:99). The Prophet's ﷺ supplication for rain was a sign of his concern for the welfare of his community and the sustenance of the land.
