اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This dua is particularly potent when drought conditions are severe, leading to hardship in settlements, affecting agriculture, water sources, and the general well-being of people and livestock. It is recited during times of intense need and when the Imam leads the prayer for rain (Salatul Istisqa).
How to Read
This supplication is often made during the Istisqa prayer, where the Imam leads the congregation in a special prayer seeking rain. The repetition emphasizes the urgency and sincerity of the plea. It is an act of acknowledging dependence on Allah and turning to Him in times of need. Raising hands during the dua is a sunnah.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain through sincere dua is a direct reflection of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah). The Quran states: "And He provides for whom He wills without limit." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:212). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that rain is a mercy from Allah. When the Prophet ﷺ would see rain, he would say: "Allahumma sayyiban naafi'an" – 'O Allah, make it a beneficial downpour' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1032). This dua, by its direct plea, aims to invoke that mercy to relieve suffering caused by drought.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'A man entered the mosque on Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutbah. The man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the wealth has been destroyed and the roads are cut off, so pray to Allah for us.' So the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain.' He said: 'We ask Allah to bring the clouds near and gather them, and then make them rain.' ...' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1013). This event clearly shows the Prophet's ﷺ direct supplication for rain during a time of hardship.
