Dua for Rain: Seeking Relief from Intense Heat

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1014

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited during times of drought and intense heat, when the land is parched and there is a dire need for rain. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often resort to this supplication when he saw signs of drought or when people complained of its severity.

How to Read

It is recommended to raise your hands while making this dua, similar to how the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands when supplicating for rain. Facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer) is also part of the Sunnah in such supplications. Repeating the phrase 'Allahumma aghithna' three times emphasizes the earnestness and urgency of the need for Allah's mercy.

Virtues & Benefits

Making this dua is a direct application of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It demonstrates our reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and acknowledges that He alone is the provider of rain and relief. Seeking rain is seeking a means of sustenance and life for ourselves, our livestock, and our land, which are all blessings from Allah. The Quran reminds us of the importance of rain: 'And We send down from the sky water in measure, and We give it rest in the earth, and verily, We are able to take it away.' (Al-Mu'minun 23:18).

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that: A man entered the mosque on a Friday and the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon. The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the livestock are perishing and the roads are cut off, so please ask Allah to send us rain.' The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.' Anas added, 'By Allah, we did not see any clouds in the sky and there was no difference between us and the houses of stone.' Then a cloud appeared like a shield, and when it got in the middle of the sky, it spread and rained. The Prophet ﷺ did not descend from the pulpit before his beard became wet with rain. It rained for that day, the next day, the next day, and the next day until the next Friday. On the following Friday, a man stood up while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the houses and the property have been destroyed (because of the excessive rain) so please ask Allah to stop it.' The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, around us and not on us. O Allah, on the hills and valleys, and on the forest-covered ground.' It stopped raining, and they went out walking in the sun. Sahih al-Bukhari 1014.
