اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا مَرِيئًا نَافِعًا غَيْرَ ضَارٍّ عَاجِلاً غَيْرَ آجِلٍ
O Allah, give us rain that revives, is wholesome, beneficial, not harmful, soon, not delayed.
Allahumma sQina ghaythan mughithan mari'an nafi'an ghayra dar-rin 'ajilan ghayra ajilin
When to Read
This dua is specifically for seeking rain during times of drought. It is particularly poignant when the drought has extended to the point where it affects the deceased, perhaps by drying up grave sites or preventing timely burials. The general plea for rain, however, is a recurring practice for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, especially when the land and its inhabitants are suffering from lack of water.
How to Read
This dua should be recited with sincerity and humility, acknowledging our absolute dependence on Allah for all provisions, including water. It is recommended to recite it after the obligatory prayers, or during congregational prayers when rain is desperately needed. Raising the hands is a customary gesture when making dua for rain, as established in the Sunnah. Focus on the intention: seeking Allah's mercy not just for the living, but also for those who have passed from this world, as their ease in the grave is also from Allah's mercy.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain through this dua is a direct manifestation of *Tawakkul* (reliance on Allah). It acknowledges that the sustenance and continuation of life are solely in Allah's hands. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to turn to Allah in times of hardship, and rain is a fundamental blessing that sustains life. The benefit extends beyond mere physical relief; it is a spiritual act that can bring Allah's mercy upon the entire community, including the deceased, as Allah's mercy encompasses all things. The Hadith mentions the Prophet ﷺ saying: 'The people did not withhold the *zakat* of their wealth, except that they were deprived of rain. Were it not for the animals, it would not have rained upon them.' (Ibn Majah 4019, Sahih). This highlights the connection between our actions and Allah's response, including the provision of rain, and by extension, the ease of those resting in their graves.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man entered the Masjid on Friday and stood to supplicate saying: 'O Allah, give us rain!' The Prophet (peace be upon him) then raised his hands and supplicated: 'O Allah, give us rain! O Allah, give us rain! O Allah, give us rain!' He then said: 'This is not withholding the *zakat*, but the people are being tested with drought, and I am supplicating to Allah to give you water.' Then the people mentioned to him the drought and its effect on them and the land. Anas said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) supplicated: 'O Allah, grant us sustenance, provide for us, and shower us with abundant, beneficial rain that is not harmful, that comes soon and not delayed.' Anas said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, send down rain upon us!' He said: 'No, but rather say: O Allah, give us rain that revives, is wholesome, beneficial, not harmful, soon, not delayed.' Anas said: So, the Prophet (peace be upon him) supplicated, and we thought that the sky would not be relieved of its burden. Then he said: 'Do you know what your Lord has said?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'He said: This morning some of My slaves became believers in Me and some became disbelievers.' [Sunan Abi Dawud 1169, Sahih]
