Dua for Rain: Seeking Allah's Mercy for the Animals and Livestock

Rain
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1170

اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا مَرِيئًا نَافِعًا غَيْرَ ضَارٍّ عَاجِلاً غَيْرَ آجِلٍ

O Allah, grant us refreshing rain that is life-giving, beneficial, not harmful, a quick shower, not delayed.

Allahumma sqina ghaythan mughithan mari'an nafi'an ghayra darin 'ajilan ghayra ajilin

When to Read

This dua is particularly important when the land is dry, crops are withering, and livestock are suffering from a lack of water. It can be recited during the congregational prayer for rain (Salat al-Istisqa) or individually, especially when observing signs of drought and hardship.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep reflection on Allah's power and mercy. Turn to Allah with humility, raise your hands as you would in supplication, and express your need for His blessing. It is also recommended to seek forgiveness for sins, give charity if possible, and ask others to make dua with you, as collective supplication holds great weight.

Virtues & Benefits

When we seek rain, we are not just asking for water for ourselves, but for the entire ecosystem. Animals and livestock are a trust from Allah, and their well-being is our responsibility. A drought can devastate livelihoods, cause immense suffering to creatures that cannot express their thirst, and disrupt the natural balance. By making this dua, we acknowledge Allah as the sole Provider (Ar-Razzaq) and the Controller of all affairs. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to make such supplications in times of need, reminding us that Allah responds to the sincere plea of His servants. The benefits extend beyond immediate relief; it fosters reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and cultivates empathy for all of Allah's creation.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man entered the mosque on Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, the livestock have perished and the roads are cut off, so pray to Allah for rain." The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: "O Allah, grant us refreshing rain that is life-giving, beneficial, not harmful, a quick shower, not delayed." Anas said: By Allah, we did not see the clouds and it was not between us and between Medina but three days. He came on the next Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. The man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the houses have been destroyed and the roads are cut off, so pray to Allah for rain." The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: "O Allah, around us and not on us, O Allah, on the hills and on the mountains, and on the valleys and on the places where plants grow." Anas said: So the rain stopped, and we went out walking in the sun. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 56, Hadith 573 - similar narration found in Sunan Abi Dawud 1170).
