Dua for Rain: Seeking Allah's Mercy for Precipitation

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1029

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This powerful and concise dua is recited when the land is dry and there's a desperate need for rain. It was the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ practice to make this supplication when he sought rain from Allah, especially during times of drought. You can make this dua during the prescribed prayer times, or even in your personal supplications (du'a) when the need arises. Making it repeatedly, as the Prophet ﷺ did, emphasizes the sincerity and urgency of the request.

How to Read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when supplicating for rain, would raise his hands and turn his back towards the Qiblah, and pray this dua. He would also often call out to Allah in a state of earnestness. While turning the back to the Qiblah is specific to seeking rain after a prayer, the act of raising hands and earnestly calling upon Allah is a general etiquette for making dua. Focus on the sincerity of your heart and the certainty that Allah is the only one who can bring relief.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies reliance on Allah (tawakkul) during times of hardship. It reminds us that sustenance and natural phenomena are entirely in Allah's control. The repetition of 'aghithna' (grant us relief/rain) underscores the humility and earnestness required when seeking Allah's help. The Quran mentions the importance of rain for life and sustenance: 'And We send down from the sky water – a blessed rain, through which We cause to grow gardens and the grain of the harvest' (Surah Qaf 50:9). Seeking rain through dua is a manifestation of this divine provision.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man entered the Masjid on Friday and the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Khutbah. The man said, 'O Allah's Messenger! The animals are perishing and the roads are cut off, so please ask Allah to send us rain.' The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.' Then he said: 'O Allah, make it a rain of plenty, beneficial, not harmful, soon, without delay.' Anas added: 'We asked Allah's Messenger ﷺ to ask Allah to make it rain from a month or so, and it was only when the next Friday came that the Prophet ﷺ, while standing, was delivering the Khutbah, when we begged him to ask Allah to bestow rain upon the people. He raised his hands and supplicated, and we too raised our hands with him and Allah bestowed rain. We could not reach our homes on account of the rain. It rained the whole week until the next Friday. A man stood up and said, 'O Allah's Messenger! The houses are being destroyed (due to the rain). Please ask Allah to stop it.' The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' So the clouds dispersed from Medina, and it rained around Medina but not on the city. Sahih al-Bukhari 1029.
