اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This is the core supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made when the Muslims were suffering from drought. While it's specifically for rain, we can extend its spirit to times of sickness. When sickness strikes us or loved ones, we can turn to Allah with this simple, earnest plea, asking for His mercy to encompass us, just as we ask for rain to nourish the earth and alleviate hardship. It's particularly potent when the skies are overcast or when rain is actually falling, reminding us of Allah's power to send down His blessings.
How to Read
Recite this earnest plea with a sincere heart, focusing on Allah's attribute of being Ar-Rahman (The Most Compassionate) and Ar-Raheem (The Most Merciful). The repetition emphasizes the urgency and depth of need. Raise your hands, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ when making supplication, and let your voice be filled with hope and reliance on Allah alone. Imagine the coolness of rain bringing life and relief, and ask for that same mercy to touch the ailing body and spirit.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua embodies the essence of reliance on Allah (Tawakkul). When the Prophet ﷺ made this dua during a severe drought, the rain came and lasted for days, illustrating Allah's swift response to the sincere supplication of His Messenger and, by extension, the supplication of the believers. Calling upon Allah for rain is a recognition of His absolute power over all creation and His role as the Sustainer. When facing sickness, this dua reinforces our dependence on Allah for healing, acknowledging that no cure is effective without His permission. It reminds us that just as rain revives the parched earth, Allah's mercy can revive a weakened body.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The people complained to Allah's Messenger ﷺ about the drought, the period of rainlessness during his time, so while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon on a Friday, he ﷺ said: 'O Allah, grant us rain.' He ﷺ repeated it three times. He ﷺ further said: 'I bear witness that Allah is our Lord. Bring us down the blessings of the earth.' Anas said: 'The sky was as clear as glass, and then clouds gathered and it rained heavily, and the roof of the mosque started leaking. So, the roof was repaired. The rain lasted for the next week until the next Friday. A man came, and as he was standing by the Prophet's ﷺ side, he said: 'O Allah's Messenger! Our houses have been destroyed. Will you ask Allah to stop it?' Allah's Messenger ﷺ smiled at this and said: 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' He ﷺ pointed to the sky with his hand. The clouds dispersed from Medina, and it rained around Medina but not within Medina." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1013)
