Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1014

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when there is a drought, or when the land is dry and in need of water for crops and sustenance. It can be recited individually or by a community during times of need. It is also a good practice to make this dua generally during times of hardship related to lack of resources.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and earnestness, raising your hands as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did when making supplication for rain. It is recommended to repeat the plea three times, as shown in the authentic narration. Focus on the feeling of dependence on Allah (SWT) and His mercy. Making sincere repentance (istighfar) before and after the dua can also enhance its acceptance.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain through dua is a direct manifestation of our reliance on Allah (SWT) for our provision and sustenance. It reminds us that all blessings, including water which is essential for life, come from Him. The act of dua itself is a form of worship and strengthens our connection with our Creator. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the Muslims supplicated for rain, Allah (SWT) responded, showing His mercy and power. This also teaches us the importance of communal supplication during times of need.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'While the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutbah on Friday, a man stood up and said, 'O Allah's Messenger! The rain-clouds have disappeared, and the children are hungry, so please invoke Allah to water us.' He invoked Allah for rain. He (ﷺ) did not invoke, except that the sky became cloudy and then it rained before the sky became clear. Then, that man stood up, and he was probably the same man, and said, 'O Allah's Messenger! Our homes are about to be ruined because of the heavy rain.' The Prophet (ﷺ) smiled and said, 'Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna' (O Allah, grant us rain, grant us rain, grant us rain).' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1014)
