Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1014

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited during times of drought, when the land is parched and the need for rain is dire. It's not limited to physical thirst; it can be invoked for any profound need, be it for healing from an illness, success in a crucial project, or relief from hardship. The urgency of the request reflects the deep reliance of the believer on Allah's mercy. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often repeat this supplication three times when seeking rain, emphasizing the sincerity and intensity of his plea.

How to Read

When making this dua, it is recommended to face the Qiblah (the direction of prayer) and raise your hands. The repetition of 'Allahumma aghithna' three times, as done by the Prophet ﷺ, adds emphasis and sincerity to the supplication. It's also sunnah to wear one's cloak inside out during the prayer for rain, symbolizing a reversal of circumstances and a plea for Allah's intervention. This act, along with raising hands and extending arms, signifies humility and earnestness before Allah. Ensuring your heart is present and your focus is solely on Allah is paramount.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain through this dua is a direct act of worship, demonstrating Tawakkul (reliance) on Allah. It acknowledges that provision and relief come only from Him. The act itself is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, drawing us closer to his example. When rain comes after such a sincere dua, it's a tangible sign of Allah's mercy and responsiveness to His believing servants. The Quran mentions Allah's power over the skies and the rain: 'And it is He who sends the winds as bearers of good tidings before His mercy, until, when they have carried clouds heavily, We drive them to a dead land and bring down thereby water, and We produce thereby all [kinds of] fruits. Thus will We bring out the dead; perhaps you will remember.' (Al-A'raf 7:57). This ayah reminds us that rain is a manifestation of Allah's mercy and a means of sustenance, and our sincere requests for it are heard.
