Dua for Rain: Seeking Allah's Mercy During Drought

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1013

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

"O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain."

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is specifically for times of drought and famine when the land is parched and the people are in dire need of Allah's mercy in the form of rain. It is often recited during the Eid prayer when the Imam notices a lack of rain, or by individuals and communities at any time of acute need.

How to Read

It is recommended to recite this dua with sincerity and humility. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often raise his hands when supplicating for rain, turning his back towards the Qiblah and raising his hands until his armpits were visible. It is also beneficial to combine this supplication with repentance, seeking forgiveness for sins, and giving charity, as these actions can draw Allah's mercy. The repetition emphasizes the urgency and deep need for Allah's intervention.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain is a direct plea to Allah for provision and sustenance, recognizing that all blessings come from Him. The Prophet's ﷺ practice of raising his hands and the repeated invocation highlights the importance of earnest supplication during times of hardship. It reinforces our dependence on Allah and His power over all creation, including the skies and the earth. The Quran mentions rain as a sign of Allah's mercy: "And it is He who sends the winds as heralds of His mercy, and We bring down pure water from the sky" (Al-Furqan 25:48).

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The people invoked Allah for rain during the time of the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'O Allah, let us have rain.' So it rained around them. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'I do not know whether it is the rain of Tabuk or something else.' Then he said, 'O Allah, let us have rain.' So it rained for a month, and the non-Muslims came and said, 'You have been asking Allah for rain, and We have been left by Allah to face the consequences of breaking our covenant.' Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'O Allah, around us and not upon us.' So the clouds dispersed from Medina and it rained around it.' Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'I saw the sky showering rain from the sides, i.e., all around Medina and not in Medina.'"
