اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا.
O Allah, send us rain! O Allah, send us rain! O Allah, send us rain!
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna.
When to Read
This heartfelt plea is made during times of drought, particularly when the seeds we have sown are in need of water for germination and growth. It's recited collectively during the congregational prayer for rain (Salat al-Istisqa) or individually with sincere supplication when the earth is dry and the crops are parched. The urgency in the repetition highlights the deep reliance on Allah for sustenance, especially for the fragile beginnings of life we've planted.
How to Read
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when supplicating for rain, would raise his hands and turn his cloak inside out. While turning the cloak is specific to that situation (symbolizing a change in condition), raising hands is a beautiful Sunnah during dua. We should face the Qiblah with humility and sincerity, seeking Allah's mercy. The repetition in this specific dua, 'Allahumma aghithna,' emphasizes the earnestness and the profound need for Allah's intervention. It's not just about the words, but the state of the heart: a heart filled with hope in Allah's boundless mercy and acknowledging our utter dependence on Him.
Virtues & Benefits
Rain is a direct mercy from Allah, bringing life to the earth and sustaining all living things. The Quran states, 'And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby growth of all kinds...' (Al-An'am 6:99). Seeking rain through sincere dua is a way of actively participating in receiving this divine mercy. It fosters a sense of gratitude for Allah's blessings and strengthens our connection with Him, reminding us that every drop of water, and indeed all sustenance, comes from Him alone. For newly planted seeds, rain is the very essence of their survival and growth, making this dua particularly vital for farmers and anyone cultivating the land.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: 'A man entered the Masjid from the other side on a Friday, and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. The man stood up and said, 'O Allah's Messenger! Our wealth has been destroyed and our children are suffering. Please ask Allah to bless us with rain.' So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, send us rain; O Allah, send us rain; O Allah, send us rain.' He added, 'And the sky was full of clouds.' Sahih al-Bukhari 1007.
